Smoking Editorial by Alexandra S.

Time and time again we see people all through the country “lighting up.” Wither it’s Marlboro or Camel people young and old find smoking to be their key to relaxation. However, as the number of smokers increase, the rate of cancer related deaths (as well as many other smoking caused diseases) also increases. Millions of teenagers pick up on this habit and due to the addictive contents in cigarettes these teenagers become hooked. Not only is it a waste of money, it’s a waste of themselves. To make the situation worse however, is that they harm the people around them. These people, who are standing up to the million dollar tobacco companies, are suffering as a result of second hand smoke. It is their choice to protect their health so why should anyone be allowed to affect that. “When I walk into a restaurant or anywhere else for that matter, I shouldn’t have to breathe in the poisons that someone else is choosing to inhale,” Sally Marks, a high school student at Warwick.

For once you start you are hooked. Due to the nicotine found in cigarettes with as much as one puff you can become addicted. As time goes on your body will physically crave this nicotine. For this reason many might try various strong. “I started when I was 14, just thought I’d try, but since then I’ve smoked about a half a pack a day for four years.” Says Eric Reihm. “But there are certain things that make it worth the struggle to stop. It gets hard at time but so far I’ve gone a week without one cigarette.” So whatever the reason might be, now’s the time to stop. And remember everytime you yourself, or anyone else, takes time to “enjoy” a cigarette remember that it effects not only you but everyone else around you. So like the saying goes, “There’s no time like the present,” so quit before your time runs out.
