A Keefer
Pennsylvania
Many of the people visiting
Chimney Corner thought it had to be a joke. It was April first of 1995, and
the owners, Mark and Terry decided that it was time that their restaurant in
Lititz became a smoke-free environment. Many people thought it had to be an
April Fool's joke. When they realized it wasn't, patrons left the restaurant
due to what they thought was a violation of their rights as smokers. "They
think they have the right to smoke whenever, where ever," Mark the co owner
of Chimney corner explained with frustration.
Therefore, when this rule went into effect, many people didn't observe it. They
tried to find ways to get around it without Mark or Terry, the owner, and mark's
mother, noticing it. "They would just smoke in the lobby or bathroom,"
mark sadly exclaimed. People that smoked in this privately owned restaurant
were addicted to the lung cancer causing chemicals in cigarettes that they couldn't
put out the horrible thing until after they put nourishing food into they're
bodies.
First, a reason that Mark was regretting his decision is, many of the waiters
and waitresses were in high disagreement with Mark on this helpful decision.
Luckily, non of them quit due to this. They should have been excited. They didn't
have to pollute their bodies with the harmful effects of the materials on the
dirty ash trays. Cigarette smokers can get so addicted that even seeing their
friends can't cause them to stop for just a few hours.
Secondly, Mark's voice fill with excitement as he explained, "Most of the
business is now made up of families." The environment is now as peaceful
as a restaurant like the Log Cabin. The sound of babies crying may sound in
your ear once in a while but it is still more peaceful in that you aren't inhaling
the horrible chemicals, while your putting good food into your body.
Third, Mark's wife had just been pregnant with their beautiful baby boy Austin.
Austin developed asthma when he was young. He was so effected by this that if
he would inhale the deadly second hand smoke, he would start to cough just as
if a frog had leaped into his tiny airway.
Due to the presence of smoke in the front lobby of the restaurant, many parts
of the lobby had to be replaced, such as the wallpaper. The wallpaper was covered
with tar and smoke stains. " It was much easier to clean up without the
mess of the dirty ashtrays, covered with horrifying pieces of ash, tar and the
grime that smokers inhale into their lungs every day.
Smokers think that their rights are so important. Mark decided that their rights
weren't important enough for them to ruin his restaurant. Chimney Corner will
stay smoke free for many years to come.
